Assam Governor inaugurates Hans renal care centre at Red Cross hospital in Guwahati

Guwahati, January 10: In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare accessibility in Assam, The Hans Foundation (THF) and the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Assam State Branch (ASB), inaugurated the Hans Renal Care Centre at Red Cross Hospital, Chandmari, Guwahati.

This state-of-the-art dialysis unit will provide free-of-cost, high-quality renal care services, bridging a critical gap in healthcare access across the region. Assam Governor and  the President of IRCS, ASB Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya inaugurated the renal care centre.

The event also witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including A K Absar Hazarika, Chairman- Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch, Sandeep J Kapur, CEO- The Hans Foundation, Padmashree Ajoy Kumar Dutta, Vijay Jamwal, Senior Director- The Hans Foundation, and several others, marking a pivotal moment in Assam’s healthcare development.

The Hans Renal Care Centre is designed to serve as a lifeline for individuals grappling with chronic kidney disease. Equipped with state-of-the-art dialysis technology, it prioritizes marginalized communities, providing essential care services free of charge to address the growing burden of chronic kidney disease.

This initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration between The Hans Foundation and the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Assam State Branch. “At The Hans Foundation, our mission is to ensure that every individual, regardless of their socioeconomic background, has access to life-saving healthcare.

This dialysis unit is a testament to our commitment to bringing quality healthcare closer to those in need, empowering communities, and fostering hope,” said Sandeep J Kapur, CEO, The Hans Foundation.

“This partnership with The Hans Foundation marks a significant milestone in our efforts to improve healthcare delivery in Assam. The new dialysis unit at Red Cross Hospital, Chandmari, will not only provide critical care but also serve as a beacon of compassion and service to humanity,” said Deba Prasad Sarma, General Secretary, IRCS, Assam State Branch.

In addition to the Hans Renal Care Centre, the event also marked the inauguration of the Red Cross Physiotherapy Centre at the same location. This facility offers comprehensive rehabilitation services for individuals with physical disabilities, injuries, or chronic conditions.

Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and staffed by experienced physiotherapists, the centre focuses on holistic care to enhance patients’ quality of life.

“We are confident that this facility will play a vital role in improving mobility, strength, and independence for individuals facing physical challenges, empowering them to lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.”

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Assam is a significant health concern. Limited access to affordable and quality dialysis services has compounded the challenges faced by patients, particularly among economically disadvantaged communities. The Hans Renal Care Centre aims to address this pressing need, offering critical support to those in need.

Beyond this initiative, The Hans Foundation drives social development through transformative programs in health, education, and livelihoods. In just one and a half years, the Guwahati chapter of The Hans Foundation has made a significant impact in Northeast India with initiatives like Hans Renal Care Centres.

Hans Mobile Medical Units, Hans Health and Wellness Centres, Hans Uttam Xikhya Project, Hans Jeevika, and its disability-related programs. These initiatives align with The Hans Foundation’s mission to create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Established in 2009, the Foundation has transformed lives through its impactful work in health, education, livelihood, disability, and disaster relief. Over the past 15 years, the Foundation has supported over 400 grassroots organizations and partnered with 12 State Governments, impacting the lives of over 37 million people across 22 states.

The Indian Red Cross Society, established in 1920, is a statutory autonomous organization supporting the government and guided by seven principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.

The Assam State Branch, with 36 district branches and over 5,000 volunteers, leads impactful community health initiatives. Its contributions include the Red Cross Hospital in Chandmari, Guwahati, established in 1965, providing childcare, maternity care, pediatrics, and community medicine, and the Red Cross Nursing Training Centre, North East India’s oldest, shaping healthcare professionals since 1956 through its Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery (ANM) courses.
