Biggest change needed is not just schemes, but a change in mindset:Conrad

Tura, Oct 30: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, Thursday addressed the MPOWER Youth Opportunities and Economic Growth Workshop.

In his remarks, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma said much potential in Meghalaya yet not much has been achieved adding that the biggest change needed is not just schemes and programs, but a change in mindset.

“Everything starts with believing that things can happen and that you want it to happen. That small spark is what the government is trying to create in every person,” he said.

He observed that 80% of people in society see the problem and complain about it but not do anything about it. He hoped programs like this will create a mindset of taking action. “Instead of just criticizing and complaining, one should ask – what can I do about it?” he said.

The Chief Minister also said that it is important to focus on the low-hanging fruits than doing too many things at the same time. “It is easier that way and it creates a momentum that further motivates you,” he said.

He added that the workshop should help identify low-hanging fruits – identifying the problem, the solution, the resources and the capacity – and take up actions picking up the right team that will be motivated.

On moving forward, the Chief Minister admitted that Meghalaya is behind on development parameters but informed that the efforts of the last eight years are showing impact now because it takes time to create institutional systems.

He informed that some of the programs of the state are recognized at the central government and even replicated in some of the other states of India and added that the strength of the state lies in its communities and stated that sectors like Horticulture, Agriculture, IT, Food Processing and Tourism have potential and the Government has been investing in them in the last few years with its own models and economic systems, focusing on few sectors.
