Chief Secretary expressed satisfaction on the arrangements in Garo hills for the upcoming L S Election

Tura, April 3: Meghalaya chief secretary, P B O Warjri today expressed satisfaction over the meticulous and elaborate plan and arrangements in Garo hills for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, scheduled for April 9.

Warjri accompanied by director general of police, Peter James Haneman was on a two-day tour across the five district of Garo hills to oversee poll preparedness.

Warjri said, “The district administration and police in Garo hills have ensured elaborate arrangement to ensure free and fair polling. We are convinced with their strategies, which have been prepared to maintain law and order”.

He also lauded the efforts of the district administration in the newly created South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills for their detailed and meticulous plan.

The two new districts were created last year. On the challenges being faced by the new districts, Warjri said, “Road infrastructure, communication and law & order situation with regard to insurgency was much better than other districts”.

He pointed that extra measures have been taken to ensure free and fair polling in insurgency hit district of East and South Garo Hills.

At Ampati, the district headquarter of South West Garo Hills, Warjri asked the district officials not to let comfort lug them down to complacency. “If you take little responsibility with full commitment, the district would have the smoothest and most successful election”.

Haneman said that overall arrangement was satisfactory in all five districts of Garo hills. “If everything was done according to the plan, there should be no security issues and the entire election process will be smooth”, he said.

Two candidates are in fray for Tura parliamentary seat – Purno Agitok Sangma from National People’s Party and Daryl William Momin from Congress party.

The constituency has a total electorate of 5,84,070, which includes 2,95,823 male and 2,88,247 female. There are a total of 929 polling stations in the five districts of Garo hills, which comprises Tura parliamentary seat.

A total of 240 booths have been identified as hyper sensitive and 121 as sensitive.(SP News)
