Shillong, March 29: The police has arrested the former area commander of Garo National Liberation Army(GNLA) Northern Zone Shri Laden Ch. Sangma alias Chenang arrested for murder of a School Teacher*
On 19th July, 2012 at about 10:30 PM, a group of armed GNLA militants numbering about 5 led by Shri Laden Sangma alias Chenang went to the house of Lt. Denybirth Momin at Resu Mepan Abri village and brutally murdered him outside his house, in front of his wife and relative, blaming him to be a Police informer. Lt. Denybirth was a renowned Science and Maths Teacher in Resubelpara Higher Secondary School.
Four numbers of empty cases of AK Ammunition, two numbers of empty cases of 9mm Ammunition and one letter in the Letter Pad of GNLA signed by the GNLA Area Commander, claiming the responsibilities of the killing, were recovered at the spot.
In this connection, a case was registered in Mendipathar Police Station of North Garo Hills District and investigated into, however the case was pending for long years due to insufficient evidences in the case.
Initially, the investigation of the case and collection of evidences was very difficult for the Police as no one was willing to come forward due to the fear psychosis spread among the general public.
Nonetheless, the investigation of the case continued and finally after gathering sufficient evidences into the case, the main accused person of the case, Shri Laden Ch. Sangma alias Chenang is arrested from Baghmara, South Garo Hills district on 27/03/2027 by Police Team of North Garo Hills.
During the interrogation it was learnt that Shri Laden Ch. Sangma belonged to the First Batch of GNLA and he was trained in the Durama Hills of Garo Hills. Eventually, in the year 2012, he became the Area Commander of Northern Zone. Prior to his joining GNLA, he is involved in business of selling A’chik swords (Millam), A’chik Shield (Sepi), and A’chik wearing Ornaments and therefore, he used to visit different villages of the Garo Hills.
One day, he happened to meet Lt. Sohan D. Shira, the founder of GNLA and a former member of ANVC at Nengmandalgre. Thereafter, in many other occasions, he happened to meet Lt. Sohan D. Shira and acquainted with him. With the idea of Lt. Sohan D. Shira, the arrested accused person Laden Ch. Sangma and 15 (fifteen) others went underground which eventually became GNLA under the leadership of Lt. Sohan D. Shira.
