Former Lok Sabha speaker, Purno and Agatha campaign at Mukul turf

Tura, March 22: Sitting Tura MP, Agatha K Sangma and National People’s Party candidate, Purno A Sangma today addressed an election campaign at Ampati, home turf of Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma. Ampati is about 70 km from Tura.

Addressing the crowd at the weekly market, Agatha said, “It is important for Garo hills to re-elect Purno Sangma as an MP to resolve the ongoing situation”.

Citing that Mukul is not being able to contain insurgency in Garo hills and discuss peace, Agatha said, “If CM can’t approach New Delhi to intervene during UPA’s tenure, how he can do so, when BJP and NDA forms the next government?”

Terming that Garo hills needs to elect a senior leader like Purno, she said, “Garo hills has just one seat in the parliament, so it is important that Purno represents us in New Delhi, who can resolve our problems. MPs job is not essay, we need a seasoned man”.

On Mukul’s Cha’e Siangna (before I die let me have something) remark against Purno, Agatha said, “If he (Purno) was thinking for himself, he would have taken rest but he thinks for Garo hills”.

Appealing for votes, Agatha even stated that Purno is likely to be given a senior position, if NDA forms the government.

Without naming Congress candidate Daryl William Momin, who is just 27, she said, “It will be difficult for a new entrant to represent Garo hills. I am young, I could have continued as MP but the present situation demands representation of an experienced politician like Purno”.

The campaign scene is slowing picking up in both the camps – NPP as well as Congress.

Launching a tirade against Mukul, Purno said, “India needs freedom from Congress”. He also nailed Mukul left, right and centre saying, “He (Mukul) has failed to bring about holistic development of Meghalaya”.

Explaining the mood of the nation, Purno said, “Congress is embroiled in corruption, which has led to price hike and utter chaos. The nation wants a change and Ampati has to give a verdict for change”.

Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma will be touring different parts of Garo hills to drum up support for Daryl William Momin from tomorrow.

On the last day of filing nomination, no one turned up. It is a straight fight between veteran Purno and greenhorn Daryl for Tura Lok Sabha seat, which goes for polling on April 9.(SP News)
