Horticulture Department of Meghalaya will promote organic farming: Ingty

Shillong, July 02: The Government of Meghalaya, through Horticulture Department will incite organic forming in the horticulture sector.

The Department has prepared the master plan to adopt 2 lakhs hectares of land in the state for organic farming in the coming five years. In the first year they will cover 20,000 hectares, in the second year 40,000 hectares and will continued till they achieve the target.

Talking to SP News Agency the Director Horticulture Department Mr Daniel Ingty said that the department will focus on Banana plantation, Pine Apple cultivation, and Citrus fruit apart from this they will also promote Ginger, Turmeric, paddy cultivation and Spices.

The government has taken a decision that they will not support anymore on any chemical pesticide that will be used in the farming sectors, the government will support organic farming using organic manure.

For these mega project the government has submitted a schemes to the North Eastern Council to support the state government to promote organic farming. At present the state government has got certification on organic forming in three agriculture produce, Turmeric, Tea and Cashewnut.(SP News)
