IAF assisted Meghalaya Govt in air drop of food items in village’s affected by natural calamities

Shillong, July 01:  The North East continues to be battered by heavy rains leaving many parts of Assam and Meghalaya severed and inaccessible from the rest of the country.

Due to embankment cut on river Barak at Silchar town of Assam, water had entered the city and submerged large parts of the town. Govt of Assam requested IAF for immediate support in the HADR Ops.

The Govt of Meghalaya also requested for air drop of ration to people at remote places of South Garo hills and South West Khasi Hills. Continuing with the motto of ‘People First and Mission Always’,  I AF launched large scale flood relief operations in Assam and Meghalaya.

Water and relief material was airlifted to Silchar from Guwahati and Jorhat by An-32s and C-130J and further airdropped on roof tops of houses in the town of Silchar by helicopters.

In Meghalaya three helicopters were deployed to airdrop food materials to the affected villages. As on 30 June 2022, IAF had airlifted more than 300 passengers and dropped, carried 5,00,000 Kgs of relief material for Govt of Assam and 21,000 Kgs of relief material for Govt of Meghalaya.
