Independency Day Celebrated in Garo Hills

Tura, Aug 17: Meghalaya speaker, Abu Taher Mondal unfurled the nation at Tura in
West Garo Hills. He took the Rashtriya Salute amidst a 38 strong
marching contingent comprising of state police, NCC and Scouts and
Guides from various colleges and schools. The people came out in large
number defying militant diktat to boycott the day. At least 6000
people had gathered at MP Stadium in Tura to take part in the
celebration.
On insurgency, Mondal said, “The crucial issue of security in Garo
hills has remained the concern for the government”. He appealed to the
people to provide all support to the government in tackling insurgency
in Garo hills.  “There is a need for coordinated approach along with
active support from the central government to tackle militancy
effectively”, Mondal added.
On flagship integrated basin development and livelihood promotion
programme, Mondal said, “The management of natural resources
particularly water and biotic resources of the state were of crucial
importance in ensuring inclusive growth and sustainable development”.
On the ban on rat-hole mining, he said, “As per the order of the NGT
the government has submitted the Mining Plan, Health Plan etc to the
concerned Ministry which is expected to give interim relief to all the
mine owners and those associated with mining activities”.
Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak unfurled the tri color at Ampati
in South West Garo Hills.  She also said that the State is
experiencing an unprecedented impact of climate change resulting in
deficiency of more than 40 percent rainfall and observed that the
situation is particularly serious in Garo hills, but assured the
gathering that the government is monitoring the situation and gearing
up the district machineries to mitigate the farmers’ sufferings.(SP News)
