International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed at Mairang

Mairang, June 26:  As part of the observation of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the office of the Child Development Project Officer, Mairang.

Integrated Child Development Services Project in collaboration with the Police Department, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Mairang today organized an awareness programme at St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, Mairang wherein the Additional Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills Mairang.

Shri P Suchiang attended as Chief Guest in the presence of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills Mairang, Shri D Nongpluh, CDPO, Mairang ICDS Project, Smti. B. Rynjah, Vice- Principal, St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, Mairang, Inspector, Shri S. Kharjana, Teachers and around 250 students participated in the program.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills Mairang, Shri P Suchiang in his address during the programme stated that the aim of the programme was to educate the students against using of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances which is a major issue talked about in the society causing harmful effects on the growth and progress of the students’ physical and mental space and also the society at large.

Shri P Suchiang also took the occasion to urge upon the students to abstain from using intoxicative substances which could hinder their progress in their daily activities and further exhorted upon them to emulate the achievers  in the field of  sports, education etc  from Eastern West Khasi Hills District even as he called upon them to stay away from drugs and substance abuse.

Meanwhile, CDPO, Mairang ICDS Project, Smti. B. Rynjah in her address spoke at length about the aim and objectives of the programme and impressed upon the gathering to not stigmatize and discriminate against addicts but to instead help them in getting rid of their addictions.

The CDPO also stressed on the need for involvement of families, voluntary organization, religious leaders and all line Departments to come forward to extend support to the addicts. To conclude the CDPO requested everyone to join hands together to fight against the menace of drugs.

Other highlights of the programme include the short play entitled ‘Ill effects of Drugs’ performed by students of St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, Mairangand pledge led by the Vice-Principal of St. Thomas Higher Secondary School,Pyndengumiong, Mairang, Sister Cecilia Kujur.
