Meghalaya to go to Lok Sabha polls next month

Shillong, March 05: Meghalaya will go for Lok Sabha polls on April 9 and with the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, the State Election department has kicked off its preparations to conduct the elections. Addressing a press conference here in Secretariat, Chief Electoral Officer P Naik informed that the filing of nomination starts March 15 till March 22.

Withdrawal of nominations is on March 26 and the counting on 16 May. He also said the model code of conduct for election comes into force from today even as he said that the state election department is assessing a requirement of 79 companies of security forces for conducting the elections in the state.

It may be mentioned that there will be 138 polling stations bordering with Assam while 90 polling stations bordering with Bangladsesh.

Chief Electoral Officer P Naik asserted that the polling in Meghalaya would be conducted for two constituencies of Shillong and Tura and altogether 2562 polling stations would be setup for the polls besides there are as s many as 1553028 voters in the state including 783317 female voters and 769711 male voters.

The Union Government would spend an amount of Rs 29 crores for the polls in Meghalaya. In the upcoming election, voters will have the option to chose the ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) button in the Electronic Voting Machines and with this new option, voters will now have the option to vote for ‘None Of The Above’ (NOTA) if any voter does not want to voter any of the contestants.(SP News)
