Shillong, Sept 27: The North Eastern Hill University along with the NEHU Yuva Tourism Club hold a rally to celebrated the World Tourism Day on September, 27, 2023. The theme of this years World Tourism Day is “tourism and green investment”. The program in NEHU commenced with a green walk.
The members include professors, research scholars and students walked around the campus to spread awareness about sustainability and green tourism. Post the green walk, everyone convened to the Multi-use Convention Hall, NEHU, Shillong where the program was held.
The program inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp, followed by a national anthem and a group song by the students from the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management. After the inauguration, the Chairman of the Yuva Tourism Club, NEHU, Prof. Saurabh K. Dixit gave a briefing on the origins and importance of world tourism day.
The HOD of Tourism and Hotel Management, NEHU, Dr. Benjamin F. Lyngdoh talked on green investment and climate change where he cited an example of the effects of climate change in his hometown, Sohra.
The Chief Guest of the program, Prof. D. K. Nayak, Department of Geography, NEHU enlightened on the change in the lingo to highlight the seriousness on the environment from climate change to crisis, global warming to global heating and biodiversity to wildlife. He further emphasized about how tourism should be sustainable and should not disturb the natural beauty.
He also mentioned how tourism and green investment should coexist harmoniously for a bright future. The vote of thanks was given by Prof. Sharad K. Kulshreshtha, Department of Tourism and Hotel Management.
The session ended with a group photograph after which a quiz competition was organised for the students. Food courts that sold indigenous dishes was also set up to celebrate this day. Photographs and crafts made from was also displayed on site.
