NEIGRIHMS celebrate World Environment Day by plating Red Sandalwood, Agar, Ashoka

Shillong, June 04: World Environment Day was observed in NEIGRIHMS with the presence of the Director of the Institute, Prof. Nalin Mehta, Medical Superintendent Prof. C. Daniala, Sanitation Officer Shri Debal Kumar Das along with senior Doctors, Nursing Officer and Faculty of Nursing College and other employees of the Institute.

The day was marked by Tree Plantation in the Institute’s Herbal Garden led by the Director and other officials and staff present there. Some of the trees planted are various medicinal, herbal and  fruit trees like Red Sandalwood, Agar, Ashoka, Custard, Apple, Coffee, Tea, Grapes, Rudraksh, Cherry Blossom and Plum trees were planted. Simultaneously the Sanitation staff carried the torch further by planting more trees in and around the campus of the Institute.

The official programme was also held in the Lecture Theatre Hall, NEIGRIHMS wherein Shri C. P. Marak, Retired IFS Officer and formerly Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Govt. of Meghalaya graced the occasion as Chief Guest and invited Guest Speaker.

“Dichotomy of Environment and Development continue to afflict both at global, national and local level”, says Shri C P Marak on the occasion of World Environment Day Celebration in NEIGRIHMS.

He urged upon the Institute to keep not less than 66% of the campus land under green cover and thus fulfilling the mandate of National Forest Policy. “Residents and patients will derive indirect benefits”, he further added.

The Director, Prof. Nalin Mehta, NEIGRIHMS shared his concerns on the declining trends of the Environment and assured that the Institute will put its effort towards making NEIGRIHMS greener by planting more trees and increase Green Cover and to ensure that we do not further pollute the environment.

The Medical Superintendent, NEIGRIHMS Prof C. Daniala also spoke on the importance of tree plantation and that the Institute is committed to compensate the Green Cover the Institute have lost during the infrastructure development of the Institute by planting more trees on areas where there is no plan for construction.

As part if the celebration, Poster Competition was held and participated by employees, students and children of staff of the Institute. Prize money and Certificates were distributed to the first three winners of the Competition by the Chief Guest, Shri C. P. Marak.

Various eye catching slogans like, “Be part of the Solution, Not part of the Pollution”, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every Man’s Needs, but not every Man’s Greed”, “Don’t be Greedy, it’s time to be Greeny”, were some of the slogans expressed creatively by the participants.
