Peace rally and mass prayer will be hled in Garo hills

Tura, March 6: The unified peace movement for Garo hills, a conglomeration of various organizations today made an appeal seeking response from the public on the deteriorating law and order situation.

They also sought for public participation in a mass prayer and peace rally, which will be held on Sunday across Garo hills.

In Tura, the mass prayer and peace rally will be held at Chandmari playground beginning from 2 pm. President of A’chik Baptist Dalgipa Krima (ABDK) Reverend R D Shira will lead the opening prayer. The exhortations will be delivered by Reverend Fr. Januarius Sangma and benediction by Reverend Boomerin C Marak.

Addressing media here, Reverend Fr. Januarius said, “This is an attempt to unite people from all communities to work in unity for restoration of peace and normalcy in Garo hills. We will appeal people to work and pray for peace and become agents of peace and progress”.

He also said, “Our forum will act as a facilitator between the government and the underground groups for holding peace parley”.

The GNLA yesterday urged Meghalaya governor K K Paul to appoint United Christian Peace Forum (UCPF) to act as mediator. To this, Fr. Januarius said, “In absence of UCPF, the new body with the name unified peace movement for Garo hills was formed. The body was formed after UCPF had given a verbal approval to us for holding peace movement in Garo hills”.

Chairperson of the forum, Mariam D Shira said, “Through this rally, we will appeal the insurgents to shun violent ways of life and come forward for holding peace negotiation”, adding, “We will also appeal centre and state government to invite outfits to negotiate peace”.

The mass prayer and peace rally will also be held in Williamnagar, Baghmara, Ampati, Tikrikilla and Purakhasia on the same day.(SP News)
