Surprise Inspection Lands Fair Price Shop in Soup

Shillong, March 22: In pursuance of its popular slogan “Jago Grahak Jago” to enlighten consumers on their rights, officials of the State Legal Metrology Department today conducted surprise inspections at several locations in the city and seized uncertified weights from one fair price shop.

Lead by the department’s Joint Controller S Tariang, Deputy Controller, SS Syiemlieh, and inspector KM Umlong, the team paid surprise visits to stores and retail outlets, including fair price shops inspecting their weighing equipment.

Speaking to this reporter, Syiemlieh said that this kind of inspection is done to create awareness amongst consumers that they get the correct measurement of the goods they purchase and that traders abide by the rules laid down as per the Legal Metrology Act 2009, and the Packaged Commodities Rules 2011.

“Every now and then we conduct these kinds of surprise inspections and today we have seized some items which have not been verified,” Syiemlieh said.

The items seized from a fair price shop include dry measures, counter machine and weights which were not verified since 2009.

While urging consumers to inform the department of any illegal or incorrect measuring or weighing, Syiemlieh said, “Traders and dealers in consumer goods should have their weights and counter machines verified once in two years, failing which stringent actions will be taken as per rules.” (SP News)
