prohibited in Bangladesh, but of course, that doesn’t stop people from finding other alternatives. For a long time, people have been drinking cough syrups like Genosedyl, Corex and Phensedyl as substitute to alcohol. These cough syrups contain Codeine, a drug derived from Morphine, in high quantity, known for its intoxicating and tranquilizing effects, and as such, attract a shitload of addicts looking to get a kick. The cough syrups were already banned in Bangladesh, however, smugglers, capitalizing on their high demand, had been smuggling them from India across the border, and selling at nearly 5 times their Indian market price.

According to survey by rights activists and organisations, over two million of the 166,280,712 Bangladeshi populations are addicted to drugs, mostly Genosedyl, Corex and Phensedyl. Considered a serious offence in Bangladesh, Phensedyl peddling is punishable with life imprisonment. Both forces follow a Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP) which aims to prevent illegal transportation of drugs along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The illegal smuggling of codeine based syrup has always been a great issue of Border Guard Bangladesh in every Border Coordination Conference. Any form of illegal trade of codeine based syrup is booked under NDPS Act. The seized items have been handed over to concerned department for further disposal.
