The DDUCC a College of NEHU at Wahiajer campus hosted Knitting and  Embroidery training

Shillong, April 30: Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College (DDUCC), a constituent College of North- Eastern Hill University (NEHU) at Wahiajer campus, recently hosted a five-day Skill Up-Gradation Training Program on “Knitting & Embroidery” from April 22nd to April 26th, 2024.

The primary aim of this initiative was to promote vocational skills, thereby empowering participants with economic independence, sustainable livelihoods through wage employment or self-employment, and fostering social inclusion.

The inauguration of the program was graced by Prof. M.S. Bisht, as the Chief Guest , while the valedictory session was graced by presence of NEHU Controller of Examination (CoE) Prof. S. Umdor as the Chief Guest, alongside Shri. S. Laloo, Headman of Wahiajer, who served as the Guest of Honour. Additionally, the event was attended by 50 artisans.

During his address, Prof. Umdor underscored the significance of craft knitting as an integral aspect of the country’s cultural heritage. Shri. S. Laloo commended DDUCC for organizing a program centered around a cherished activity among women in the community.

Knitting not only provides enjoyment and creativity but also serves as a valuable source of income for many women across India. Hand-knitted items are commonly sold at local markets and are even exported worldwide, contributing significantly to the livelihoods of rural women.

Principal Incharged of DDUCC, Prof. (Mrs) S.M. Sungoh, emphasized the rich and diverse history of knitting in India, tracing its roots back to ancient civilizations. Today, knitting and embroidery remain cherished and forms the integral parts of Indian culture, appealing to individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

With the advent of online communities and marketplaces, the future of knitting and embroidery in India appears promising, ensuring that this timeless craft continues to bring joy and creativity to people for generations to come.

Through practical demonstrations and interactive sessions, artisans gained valuable insights and knowledge regarding various aspects of the training, including cutting, stitching, and the utilization of different types of trimmings.
