Tura, March 22: The Garo Students’ Union today said that illegal transfer of land between local residents and outsiders in plain belt area of Meghalaya’s Garo hills has pose a serious concern.
“The transfer of land owned and occupied by local residents, both tribal and non-tribal to outsiders through illegal means by way of sale, mortgage, lease, settlement is violation of Meghalaya Land and Revenue Regulation (Application and Amendment) Act 1972”, said GSU Tikrikilla unit president, Walseng Sangma
The union said that the situation demands urgent attention, as outsiders are taking advantage of the practice.
“The price of the lands is soaring up and the brokers are seeking maximum benefits for illegal land transfer deals”, said Sangma.
The union also revealed that village elders, headman were actively involved in the illegal transferring of lands to outsiders.
“The failure to restrict the practice by villagers including concerned authorities was encouraging influx on a large scale in the region”, said Sangma.
The student body has warned locals not to engage in illegal deals or else legal action will be initiated.(SP News)
