The GSU opposed uranium mining in the South West Khasi Hills District

Shillong, July 21: The Garo Students’ Union (Khasi Hills Zone) opposed the uranium mining and demanded for a full closure of the proposed mining of the mineral at the same time stating that the Central and State Government should put an end to the uranium mining policy in the state.

In a statement issued here, Saljrang Momin, president KSU (KHZ) on the health risks of uranium mining for the local population and the whole population in the in the surrounding mines is endangered and stated that diseases ranging from lung cancer, leukaemia, stomach cancer and birth defects are associated with uranium mining.
