The NESFAS will organized first ever Mei-Ramew Market in Shillong

Shillong, April 05: The NESFAS will hold its first ever Mei-Ramew Market on the 7th of this month , an initiative brought forward to celebrate and encourage the consumption of ecologically-grown local food produce.

Followed by the successful response to the 2015 Terra Madre Festival, which gathered 39 local and international communities in a celebration of food, culture, and diversity, the farmers market will feature home-grown produce from Khweng, Ri-Bhoi, and Nongtraw, East Khasi Hills communities.

These communities – “the gatekeepers of agrobiodiversity” – will showcase an array of products, from wild edible plants and dried meats, to produce from jhum and kitchen gardens, encouraging visitors to buy them.

The event, which is being held at NESFAS headquarters between 10 am and 4 pm, will also present a Cooks’ Alliance kitchen serving snacks made from native products, where visitors can be inspired to experiment with native ingredients and create new tastes in their own kitchens.

NESFAS hopes to turn this initiative into a regular event, serving as yet another platform bringing people together and connecting locals to the pleasures of tasty and healthy local food.

“This farmers market is not only about buying and selling, but also a medium of awareness for the consumers as to where the products come from, and to connect them with local producers,” said Janak Preet Singh, Associate at NESFAS.
