Shillong, May 25: Two Meghalya prominent regional parties- the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hills State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) has struck chord by deciding to go for a pre poll alliance ahead of the 2018 state assembly elections.
The decision was arrived at after the meeting of the top leaders of the two parties in Shillong on Thursday. Announcing this, President of the UDP Donkupar Roy said, “We have agreed to work together in the 36 legislative segments of Khasi-Jaintia Hills to come to come to power”.
The formation of this alliance between this two prominent parties in the Khasi Hills Region is to ensure that in 2018 their should be a non-congress government in the 2018. A Coordination committee was form to finalize the modalities of the alliance.
They have form the UDP-HSPDP Coordination Committee, where Dr Donkupar Roy UDP president was made the chairman of the Coordination Committee, and the president of the HSPDP Ardent Basaiawmoit as Co-Chairman and Dr K Shen as the secretary and Mr Bindo M Lanong as a member to finalizes the modalities.
When asked about the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), Dr Roy said that this alliance is only to look at the common problems of the North Eastern State, but when it come to the state this alliance will be within the regional parties of the state, He urged others parties to joint the alliance.
While answering to alliance with the BJP or the NPP, Dr Roy said that they have not discussed about it, we may have post poll alliance or pre poll alliance that yet to come, but our alliance is with the regional parties of the state not with the national party.
The president of the HSPDP Mr Ardent M Basaiawmoit said that, the consultation for the formation of an alliance within the regional parties is there for quite sometime and today they have come to the decision to form this pre-poll alliance the UDP and the HSPDP. Earlier MLA can left the party since there is no law but now they are bind by the law where they have to abide by the party decision.
