Two FIRs filed in Mairang PS on the mob lynching case in Umthlong Village of EWKH District

Shillong, May 04: Two First Information Report (FIRs) were filed in Mariang Police Station in connection with theunfortunate mob lynching case happened in Umthlong Village, Eastern West Khasi Hills yesterday at around 5.30pm wherein two local male persons were lynched by a mob, approx 1500 in number.

The Officer In Charge of Mairang PS had received a telephonic information at around 4.05pm yesterday from the Sordar of Umthlong Village to the effect that two unknown persons were being held by the village durbar on the ground that they tried to rape a minor girl, age 17 yrs, at her residence.

Thereafter they were caught and brought to Community Hall by people of that village at around 1.30pm or so, however when the magistrate and police arrived at the village at around 4.55pm or so, the crowd that were gathered there didn’t allow the magistrate and police to take the unknown persons into their custody.

While the magistrate was negotiating with some members of the crowd to allow the police to take the two in their custody of accused persons, then all of sudden the remaining members of public rushed towards the community hall and broke open the door and lynched the two persons.

Thereafter the mob dispersed from that place, instantly the magistrate called for an ambulance and the two injured persons were taken to Tirot Sing Civil Hospital, Mairang.

On arrival at the hospital at around 7pm, one of injured, Shri Melar Kurbah, 35 yeas residence of Demthring village, EKH was declared brought dead and the other, Shri Hasmendra Kharkylliang, 50 years residence of Shyrwang village, EWKH was referred to Higher Centre Shillong, but on reaching Shillong Civil Hospital he was declared brought dead.

In this regard two  FIRs was received in Mairang PS and accordingly two cases have been registered one is Mairang PS C/No 24(05)2024 u/s 376D/324 IPC, and the onther one is ⁠Mairang PS C/No 25(05)2024 u/s 120B/302/34 IPC. It is to be noted that the Sordar of Umthlong village got to know of this incident at around 1.30pm but informed the police only at 4.05pm.
