Wild life protection Act 1972 is ineffective due to under staff

Shillong, June 19: The Wild life protection Act, 1972 has come into force in the state of Meghalaya since the inception of the state, but till date this act has not been able to implement  properly due to the under staff in the wild life division, which is under the forest department.

The wild life division is very much aware that smuggling and killing of wild life animals in the state of Meghalaya, particularly killing of  elephants for meat consumption is prevalent in the state, but due to under staff in the wild life division its make the officer very difficult  stop poacher from hunting.

According to this Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 it has been clearly mention in section 9 of the act that killing of wild animals is prohibited, this act not only speak about protection of animals but also protection of certain spices on plants.

The act said that any offenders who were caught they will be punished with an imprisonment for a period of three month or with fine of Rs.25000/- or with both if any person commit an offence for the first time.
