Shillong, March 26: In a tragic incident, a 23-year old woman lost her life after being allegedly tortured by her husband, Ravi Shankar Prasad and in-laws in a suspected dowry case, in Shillong.
The young woman identified as Puja Prasad was found hanging in her in-laws’ house located at Pynthorumkhrah 6th Furlong in Shillong on Saturday night and the body was first discovered by her mother-in-law who informed the other family members. She was immediately rushed to NEIGRIHMS on the same night but died the following evening.
Shah, who was originally from Bihar, was allegedly a victim of domestic violence and was frequently tortured by her husband and in-laws over dowry.
Sources informed that if this was suicide, the victim wouldn’t have had bruises all over her body. She was allegedly beaten before she was hanged and it appears that one of her hand was even broken.
According to the neighbours, the husband used to hit and beat his wife almost everyday and she would often run to to her neighbour’s house to hide. The family of the husband, who are permanent residents of Shillong, have been torturing the young woman, who has a six month old child.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father, who arrived in Shillong from Bihar today morning, alleged the husband and in-laws of killing his daughter because they couldn’t comply with their demands. He also stated that earlier this week, his wife received a phone call from their daughter’s in-laws who threatened to harm their daughter if they wouldn’t meet their demands.
“My daughter suffered in their hands, they would beat her and threaten her. I was informed by the neighbours here that there was no respite for my daughter from her husband and in-laws’ cruelty and to say that my daughter killed herself by hanging is totally false. I know this is not suicide, this is murder,” said the disheartened father.
While the husband has been arrested on Sunday evening, the in-laws are, however, served notice owing to their old-age. “The husband has been arrested on Sunday evening and the police are investigating the case to find out what the cause that led to her death.
