Maligaon, August 22: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel of N.F. Railway have been successfully recovering consignments of contraband items during raid and search at stations and trains over N.F. Railway.
In one such case on 20.8.2020 while RPF Sub Inspector Mr D Barman and Constable Mr. Sangram Singh of RPF of Guwahati, Head Constable u Mr. M.R. Deka of CIB Guwahati along with officers and staffs of GRPS were conducting rounds over Guwahati Railway station platforms.
At about 02.10 pm they noticed some parcel packages lying on PF No 6/7 of Guwahati Railway station. Later it was found that the packages are loaded with chewing tobacco (Gutkha) packets. On counting, total 90 packages found.
As per the railway booking marks, the consignments were booked from New Delhi to Guwahati. The recovered packages were unloaded from VPU No 078270, which arrived at Guwahati on 20.8.20 by parcel special train No 00402 UP.
As transportation of tobacco product is banned by Govt. of Assam, the above recovered parcel packages containing chewing tobacco packets have been seized by GRP in presence of RPF & other witnesses. In this regard, OC/GRPS/GHY has registered one GD entry vide No 358 dated 20.08.20. No arrest could be made so far.
Again in another incident on 20.08.2020 RPF and Task Force of Tinsukia division conducted surprise check on train no. 05956 special Brahmaputra Mail. During checking 02 packets containing banned tobacco items were found in the luggage cum parcel van which was booked from New Jalpaiguri to Mariani by making false declaration.
Accordingly, RPF Sub Inspector Mr. Rakesh seized both the packets and handed them over to IPF of Dibrugarh for further disposal. A written complaint was lodged to IC of GRP and Dibrugarh for taking necessary legal action. Approximate value of seized packets is Rs. 2, 68,537/-.
It may be mentioned here that during last three years (upto July 2020) total 654 cases of smuggling of contraband items were detected by RPF with recovery of property worth Rs. 17,93,72,180/- with the arrest of 185 persons.
