IBSD is promoting traditional foods and medicinal plants of Mizoram for viksit Bharat

Shillong, May 17: Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Mizoram Centre organized aprogramme on “Bioeconomy from Bioresources:Promoting Bioresourcesof Mizoram for Viksit Bharat” in collaboration with Mizoram Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTIC), Govt. of Mizoram.

During the programme, Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director, IBSDhighlighted on various research verticals for the development of bioeconomy from bioresources from NER. He mentioned that IBSD is organising different outreach activities in NER for societal benefit and to encourage startups in this region.

He highlighted that IBSDhas established phytopharmaceutical mission for documentation of traditional healthcare practices and bioresources of NER for their scientific validation, value addition to propel innovations, discoveries and inventions.

Under this mission, IBSD is exploring ethnopharmacological perspectives of medicinal plants including their cultivation, sustainable management, chemical profiling andvalue addition.

In this context, IBSD has established linkages between traditional healers and the scientific communities for benefit sharing and promotion of start-ups based on development of herbal medicinal products.

IBSD has performed metabolomics studies of several medicinal plants with potential therapeutic effects for establishing their mechanism of action with network pharmacology and synergistic study.

IBSD is promoting the development of traditional knowledge based therapeutic agents leading to socioeconomic development of the region as well as benefits to traditional health care practitioners.

IBSD has documented large number of indigenous traditional knowledge associated with traditional fermented foods of NER. IBSD has developed starter culture consortium and controlled fermentation process for safe, quality, and healthy products.

Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor,Mizoram Universityjoined the programme.  He appreciated the research and outreach activities of IBSD for the development of bioeconomy from bioresources in NER.

He highlighted various bioresources of Mizoram including bamboo, orchids and fermented foods & beverages which can be explored for their documentation and scientific validation.

Er H. Lalsawmliana,Chief Scientific Officer and Member Secretary, MISTIC, Govt. of Mizoram highlighted the research outcome of collaborative project on “Starter culture-based controlled production of traditional fermented food, Bekang-Um”. He appreciated the research activities and outreach programmes of IBSD for promoting traditional healer’s practices of NER.

Dr.LalchhandamiTochhawng, Principal Scientific Officer,MISTIC highlighted different initiative of MISTIC for the promotion of medicinal plants of Mizoram which can be explored for scientific validation under Phytopharmaceutical mission of IBSD.

Shri. Sandeep Yadav, Scientist and In-charge, Forest Research Centre for Bamboo and  Rattan, Mizoramhighlighted bioeconomic aspects of bamboo resources available in this region.

Dr. K. Jeyaram, Scientist, IBSD, Sikkim Centre highlighted starter culture-based controlled production of Bekang-Um, a traditional fermented food of Mizoram for improved quality, safety and health benefits.

Dr. Jitendra K. ShuklaScientist-In-Charge, IBSD, Mizoram Centre highlighted mass multiplication and production of quality planting material for medicinal and aromatic plants of NER. Shri Nilimesh Sarkar, Executive, KVIC, MSME, Mizoram highlighted various opportunities for the entrepreneurs of this region from various schemes ofMSME, Govt. of India.

All the stockholders, beneficiaries and entrepreneurs interacted with experts and shared their views for the development of startups. The programme was attended by faculties, scientists, scholars from MISTEC, Mizoram University, different institutes, IBSD, Imphal, IBSD, Sikkim and IBSD, Shillong.
