Shillong, Nov 19: Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang met with the protesting students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and requested them to suspend their indefinite hunger strike pending the completion of the inquiry into the alleged mismanagement and administrative failures within the University.
He was accompanied by the Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang and East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah. Speaking to media persons, DP Wahlang said, “We came here with the specific objective of requesting the students to suspend the agitation pending the completion of the inquiry.”
“So, I had a word with all of them and told them the reason why they should suspend their agitation. I am confident and I hope that they will sit together with different organization who are agitating and they will suspend during period of inquiry. I have come here on behalf of the state government and also on personal capacity, both me and the DGP,” he added.
Tuesday is the 15th day of the indefinite hunger strike by the students led by NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and backed by KSU-NEHU Unit. The students have been demanding the removal of Prof. PS Shukla as the Vice Chancellor of the NEHU.
Last week, Union Ministry of Education constituted a 2-member committee to probe the allegations of administrative irregularities in the university. Following this, VC Shukla went on a 2-week leave.
