CCAWDA to urged state govt to bring in effective laws to tackle, drug, crimes against women

Shillong, September 09: Members of the  Committee Crimes Against Women and Drug Abuse (CCAWDA) unanimously  decided  to appeal to the state government to bring in effective laws to tackle the increasing menace of drug abuse and crimes against women in the state.

Majority of the speakers during the public meeting cum awareness programme had raised their concern over the increasing crimes against women and drug abuse while also demanding stronger and effective Laws to be framed and adopted by the state government with an aim to eradicate the menace from the society once and for all.

Some of the participants attending the public meeting carried with them placards which read, ‘Hang the Rapist’, “We strongly oppose the atrocities against women and young girls in the state’ etc..

HSPDP MDC from Mylliem constituency, Teilinia Thangkhiew in her speech said, “The number of crimes against women has greatly increased day after day however we have yet to see any effective laws put in place to eradicate this menace.”

“I have taken his issue regarding crimes against women twice as a motion during the KHADC session however I feel whatever is being discussed in the house seems to stay within the confines of the four walls of the District Council,” She said.

According to her, the Executive Committee (EC) of the KHADC used to nod their heads in approval to take up the matter seriously but after the conclusion of the session everything is ancient history.

“This is a time when representatives of the people along with various NGOs and the general public at large should come out and demand better and stronger laws against such crimes,” She said.

In her observation the police department when dealing with such cases, have completed their part of the investigation and even submitted the charge sheet, however the conviction takes too long.

A government prosecutor, Rihun Swer in her speech said, “I have dealt with numerous cases pertaining to crimes against women and for me the parents should play a key role in teaching their children to be weary and not to meet any stranger they find in various social networking sites like Facebook or Whatzapp.”

She further urged upon those women facing such abuse to come out and report the matter with concern authorities so that action can be taken against the people involved in such heinous activities.

Earlier, Nickson Dohling, vice president HYC said, “We want to send a message to all the 36 MLAs currently attending the Assembly session to put on hold the ‘musical chairs’ and concentrate on the serious issues concerning the women and youths of the state.”

He suggested that the government should frame laws which will empower the people to take action against those involved in committing such heinous crimes against women.

Meanwhile, KHNAM, MDC Mr A Nongrum said, “Parents should not wait for politicians, NGOs, village dorbar or the state government to eradicate this problem by they them self should identify and teaching their children the wrongs and rights in the society.”
