Curfew relaxed for 12 hours in Chokpot in South Garo Hills

Tura, June 1: The situation in Meghalaya’s Chokpot in South Garo Hills, which had turned violent, following a mob attack on a police station is limping back to normalcy.

The curfew was relaxed for 12 hours today from 7 am to 7 pm.

The curfew was imposed on Thursday following mob – police standoff over a custodial death of a suspected overground worker of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Witson M. Sangma.

Sangma had died in police lock-up on Wednesday.

“The situation is limping back to normal. We will review it and act accordingly”, said deputy commissioner in-charge of South Garo Hills, T. G Momin.

Following two custodial deaths this month, several NGOs have called for a non-cooperation movement tomorrow across Garo hills.

Balsan S. Marak, an undertrial prisoner died at a government hospital here on May 20.

The groups are demanding a CBI or a judicial inquiry into the deaths.

Reacting to the ongoing situation at Chokpot, South Garo Hills police chief Lakador Syiem said, “The NGOs, church forum and concerned citizens have helped us to defuse the situation”.(SP News)
