Shillong, August 24: Dr. P. B. M. Basaiawmoit, Consultant North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) has written a letter to the prime minister of India Mr Narendra Modi, saying that “ please don’t treat the agitation that was taken place in Tripura on the 23th August 2016 just like others law and order problems.
In his letter Dr PBM Basaiawmoit said that “We have come to learn that the situation in Agartala, the capital of Tripura State took a serious turn for the worst since 02:00 PM, this afternoon, arising from the Rally and agitation for a separate tribal State held in Agartala”.
It is possible that the Army has been called in to assist the State’s police in bringing back normalcy but till now, apparently, the situation is still very tense and no one can vouchsafe that it will not spread into the interior where majority of the indigenous people of Tripura are living.
Of course, you would be in a far better position to know about the whole matter, right from its genesis and as to its present status but allow us to mention that the erstwhile princely State of Tripura is the classic example where the indigenous community have become minority while the later settlers have taken over the polity of the State. And it is feared that the finally, the indigenous community will face the brunt of the outcome.
As such, we would urge upon you Sir to kindly and immediately intervene in the whole matter in the best possible way and that there would be fair dealing with the issue rather than treating it simply as a law and order problem.
