Meghalaya will witness the biggest trade union rally tomorrow in the state capital

Shillong, September 01: Meghalaya will witness the biggest trade union rally tomorrow in the state capital the 2nd September 2016, Narendra Modi government is going to face its biggest National Strike and Protest.

Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) along with its associated with comradely organisations The Nazareth Hospital Workers Union (NHWU) and The Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers & Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA), stands in solidarity with the workers around the country in the All India General Strike and protests on 2nd September 2016 which stands as a mark of protests against the anti-people, anti-workers policies and authoritarian attitude of the Government.

The Government’s has been unable to curb the price rise of essential commodities or generate employment or increase Minimum Wage and yet it is moving fast towards demolishing existing labour laws thereby empowering the employers with unfettered rights to “hire and fire” and strip the workers and trade union of all their rights and protection provided in laws.The anti-worker and authoritarian attitude of the Government is also nakedly reflected in their refusal to implement rights such as Living wages.

In Meghalaya, TUR has led the way for the working class struggles’ and it believes that a cooperation and unity among the working class is the only way we take back power from the ruling elites to ensure a truly democratic and egaltarian society.

As part of the solidarity programme on 2nd September, TUR, NHWU, MGSPHSVA call upon the struggling workers of Meghalaya to extends their support to the 12 points charter of demands to be made during the General Strike and participate in a Trade Union march at 11.00 am starting from AITUC office on Quinton Road.

The 12 point charter of Demands are,urgent measures for containing price-rise through universalisation of public distribution system, banning speculative trade in commodity market, Containing unemployment through concrete measures for employment generation, Strict enforcement of all basic labour laws without any exception or exemption and stringent punitive measures for violation of labour laws.

Universal social security covers for all workers,Minimum wages of not less than Rs 15,000/- per month with provisions of indexation,Assured enhanced pension not less than Rs.3,000/- p.m. for the entire working population, Stoppage of disinvestment in Central and State PSUs, Stoppage of contractorisation in permanent perennial work and payment of same wage and benefits for contract workers as regular workers for same and similar work, Removal of all ceilings on payment and eligibility of bonus, provident fund; increase the quantum of gratuity.

Compulsory registration of trade unions within a period of 45 days from the date of submitting application; and immediate ratification of ILO Conventions C 87 and C 98, Stoppage of Pro Employer Labour Law Amendments, Stoppage of FDI in Railways, Insurance and Defence,In addition to these the central trade unions are also demanding the withdrawal of the Land Acquisition amendment bill, ordinance.
