National Games 2022 must pave way for Sports Acadamies for the youths in Meghalaya

Mr John Kharshiing.Shillong, October 31: Participating in a 3 day program in Almaty, Shri John F Kharshiing, Vice-President(EZ), Boxing Federation of India, & President, Meghalaya Boxing Association,  visited the AIBA World Boxing Academy, Talgar, Almaty Region, Kazakhstan, which is a specialized center of excellence for Boxing National Federations that are affiliated to AIBA.

The Academy provides the most modern training facilities and programs, not only for the development of athletes but also for a wide range of experts, coaches, judges, doctors, sports managers and administrators. This sports complex is one of the main foundations for the further development and promotion of boxing. Classrooms as well as state-of-the-art gyms and boxing halls, equipped and staffed with the most modern equipment, are key for future champions.

The Total space of 29,000 m2, Accommodation for over 160 people, 76 Double standard Rooms, 12 Single Rooms, Conference hall (I) for 210 people, Conference hall (II) for 150 people, Seminar room for 65 people, 500 m2 of medical and sport science facilities, 5 boxing rings, Fully equipped (more than 100 equipment) boxing and cardio gym, Full medical screening facilities, Anti-doping laboratory in Almaty, 25-meter Swimming pool and Sauna, Running track and Football pitch, they also conduct, ATHLETES’ PROGRAMS, AIBA scholarship program, Special training camps, Special sparring sessions, Sports science support – nutrition, strength and conditioning, fitness testing, Sports psychology – mental skills training to develop mental toughness, Personal development programs tailored to athletes, Athlete education programs, Post-career development, The AIBA WORLD BOXING ACADEMY, of AIBA, was set up to develop next generation of boxers, as well as supporting the development of sport from grassroots through to elite level. The first of its kind, the AIBA Boxing Academy is based in Talgar, Almaty Region, Kazakhstan.

Completed in 2013, the AIBA World Boxing Academy is an integrated training institute which embraces all aspects of the development of the sport of boxing. World class facilities will host world class programs for AIBA National Member Federations. The AIBA Academy will set best practice global standards for boxing education, development and performance.

On a lighter note it was during his stay in this Academy that Shri John F Kharshiing, was informed that the tasty roast meat which was well cooked was horse meat, apparently a number of countries neighbouring Mongolia have horse meat.

Kazakhastan with a population of 18 million has excelled well in the XXXI Summer Olympics at Rio, they picked up a total of 17 Olympic medals Olympic – Three gold, five silver, and nine bronze medals. The Olympic Medal win at Rio has positioned Kazakhstan in the 22nd position out of the 206 Countries in the over all medal tally. India with 2 olympic medals at Rio and 1.2 billion population is ranked at 67th.

Inspite of the huge challenges, shri. John F Kharshiing, Vice-President, Boxing Federation of India, looks forward to the tremendous opportunities that will come about with the proposed National Games and suggest that the Government of Meghalaya, including the North East Council, must consider options of investing in sustainable Academies so as to tap the potentiality of the youths of Meghalaya and North East in the Olympic and Non-Olympic Sports for the sake of the youths of Meghalaya.
