Shillong, December 22: The Sub Divisional Magistrate, Sohra Civil Sub Division has promulgated an Order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting opening of any quarry within 500m radius from the location of the major bridge at Tharia over River Wahrew.
This Order is imposed following the information received from the Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads) Sohra Division relating to strengthening, improvement including metalling and blacktopping of road from Bholaganj to Nongjri including construction of major bridge at Tharia over River Wahrew.
Moreover, as per international standards and as per safety regulation, no mining and blasting activity is recommended within an area of 300 metres from the location of bridge due to high intensity of shock waves. As this bridge is having largest span supported on suspenders, the nature of effect of shock wave cannot be assumed and on top of that, the area surrounding the bridge consist sedimentary rock formation. This Order shall come to force with immediate effect until further orders.
