State govt should implement the SC to strip the ST status of those women married to a non-tribal

 

SHILLONG, July 22: The Poor People Movement (PPM) has demanded that the state government should implement the Supreme Court order issues in the year 2006 to strip the Seclude Tribe status of those women married to a non-tribal man.

In an awareness campaign on the issue of inter community marriage at Motphran the participants includes the HYC, HANM, HUAM and MDC of Jaiaw constituency Adelbert Nongrum. The aim of campaign is make the people aware of the dangers of inter community marriage.

Speaking at the awareness campaign Jaiaw MDC Adelbert Nongrum said, “It is time for our people to wake up from this silent attack by non-tribal’s by keep our distance from inter community marriage.”

He however felt that this can only happen if the family keeps an eye on their family members not to get tricked into an inter community marriage.

Louis Dohtdong president PPM said, “It is sad to see that our Khasi women do not know how to respect Khasi men in today’s generation.”

He further said that the people should understand that inter community marriage will only bring great harm to the prosperity of the state.
