The 2-day training on Child Protection & Child Rights concludes at Ampati

Ampati, June 9: A two-day training on Child Protection & Child Rights organized by the South West Garo Hills district administration concluded here at Ampati on Friday with most of the participants expressing the need to have more awareness programmes in local languages at the village level to sensitize the people on the rights of the children and their protection from all forms of violence and abuse.

The training was organized for MCS and MPS officers, police officers, government officials and pleaders, NGOs and women groups of the district which was also attended by officials of Education and Health departments, school principals as well as teachers.

In his concluding remarks on the second day of the training, Deputy Commissioner Cyril V.D. Diengdoh said we are living in the times when crimes against children are increasing day by day and expressed hope that this training would leave all the district functionaries concerned better equipped to respond to situations when children are subjected to violence and abuse.

The wide ranging subjects covered in the training would help them to follow due procedures while responding to such situations and help them bring justice to our children, he said, adding that all functionaries and stakeholders in the district should be keenly aware of their roles and responsibilities and work in better coordination while dealing with such situations without allowing them to escalate into bigger controversies that would lead to wrong coverage in the media.

During training sessions, District Social Welfare Officer, Ms. Linda J. Sangma highlighted on the Charter of Rights for a child, while Legal-cum-Protection Officer, District Child Protection Unit, Ampati, Ms.Tanya Ch. Marak spoke about violence against and sexual abuse of children at home and in school and the role of Judiciary in protection and prevention of Child Labour and Child Rights.

Earlier on Thursday, Labour Inspector, Zikzak C&RD Block, Mr.Divyajyoti Hajong deliberatedon Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act, 1986, while District Child Protection Officer, Ampati, Ms. Tanweera Sangma gave a presentation on Child Trafficking and Child Protection. The sessions were followed up with questions, interactions and discussions and was moderated by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ms. M.T.Sangma during the two-day training programme.
