Tura, May 8: The Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma said that the biggest challenge today is that the internal security of the nation is eroding and that the minorities are becoming the most vulnerable group and called for the people to be alert, vigilant and assertive to build a safe, secure and civilized society.
He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the Hallidayganj Police Station in West Garo Hills in the presence of Meghalaya Speaker A.T.Mondal, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Zenith Sangma, Forest and Environment Minister Clement Marak, local MLA Ashahel D. Shira, former minister Abdus Saleh, Addl.DGP, B.L. Buam, DIG (Western Range), Mukesh Kr. Singh, Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi and hosts of officials from the police department and other district officials on Monday afternoon.
The Chief Minister asserted that the government has been able to reverse the trend of insurgency and restore peace and normalcy, particularly in the Garo Hills region and this was due to the priority given by the government in strengthening the internal security apparatus. He said that creation of new police stations across the state was part of the government’s process of bringing administrative reforms to create an enabling environment to all the people particularly to the youth and marginalized sections of the society.
Considering its strategic location on the inter-state border with Assam opposite to Hat Singimari, the Chief Minister expressed hope that the police station would benefit the most vulnerable sections of the society, adding that “unless we are able to take care of our most vulnerable groups we cannot be called a civilized society”. He also said that the law of the land can prevail depending on how effectively we enforce it and called upon the police for a stronger and better coordination with their counterparts in Assam to deter cross-border crimes.The Chief Minister also made the first entry in the General Diary (GD) of the new police station.
Assemby Speaker A.T.Mondal, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister, Zenith Sangma, Forest & Environment Minister Clement Marak and ADGP B L Buam were among other who also spoke on the occasion, while Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi read out the official notification declaring the upgradation of Hallidayganj outpost to a Police Station, which would cover 21 villages. Earlier Hallidayganj was under Phulbari Police Station.
