Mairang, July 05: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Shri Metbah Lyngdoh today inaugurated the office of the District Transport Officer(DTO) and Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Mairang at Lumsohkhlur, Mairang and also unveiled the foundation stone for the permanent building of the office at a function which was also attended by Meghalaya Transport Minister.
Shri Dasakhiat Lamare, Water Resources Minister, Shri Brolding Nongsiej, Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw, Pa’iem P.M Syiemlieh, Commissioner of Transport, Government of Meghalaya, Shri I.W Ingty, Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri W. Nongsiej, Superintendent of Police of the District, Shri M.B Syiem, , District officials, Traditional Heads, School Principals and others.
During his address, the Chief Guest, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Shri Metbah Lyngdoh expressed happiness to associate himself with the programme even as he took the occasion to congratulate the Minister in charge and officials of the Transport Department for fast tracking the inauguration of the DTO office in the district, the aim of which is to bring administration closer to the people.
Speaking on road accidents which occur on a day to day basis, Shri Lyngdoh took the occasion to urge upon citizens to drive cautiously, keep up to date vehicle documents and to abide by existing rules and regulations to avoid accidents and unfortunate events while also stating that the office of the newly inaugurated office of the DTO shall serve to ensure that all rules, safety norms and regulations are adhered to by the public in the interest of safety of all concerned.
Underlining the crucial role that taxes play in the welfare and development of the state, the Speaker called upon citizens to ensure timely payment of taxes as delayed payment of the same is likely to cause problems in future in the form of fines and surcharges.
Meghalaya Transport Minister, Shri Dasakhiat Lamare in his address emphasized on road safety and urged the public to co-operate with the Department by paying taxes on time, following all norms and regulations including wearing of seat belts, proper usage of signals and indicators, avoiding usage of mobile phones while driving, etc.
Meanwhile, Water Resources Minister and Mawthadraishan MLA, Shri Brolding Nongsiej in his speech stated that the office of the DTO, Eastern West Khasi Hills District will alleviate the problems faced by citizens of the District in accessing the services of the Transport Department.
Earlier during the programme, Commissioner of Transport, Government of Meghalaya, Shri I W Ingty listed out the different services offered by the newly inaugurated office which includes maintenance of a database of vehicles registered in Eastern West Khasi Hills District, issuance and renewal of licenses, permits, certificates, collection of taxes, enforcement of road safety rules, etc.
It may be mentioned that the District Transport Officer, Eastern West Khasi Hills District will be assisted by a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), an Upper Divisional Assistant (UDA), an Assistant System Engineer, a Peon and a Chowkidar.
Others who spoke during the programme include the Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri W. Nongsiej and District Transport Officer, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri W. Makdoh. The programme was presided by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri A. Nongbri.
