The NEHUTA demanded that the VC of NEHU should listen to the aggrieve Teachers

Shillong, June 27: The NEHUTA regrets the attitude of the NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabodh Sukla in reneging his own words of taking into consideration the report submitted by the Review Committee on Teachers’ career advancement scheme. The members of NEHUTA marched in protest against betrayal by the Vice-Chancellor before the administration and demanded that he should listen to the aggrieved teachers. The VC disappointed teachers by not meeting them and showed neglect to the teaching community who assembled seeking justice from the Vice-Chancellor.
The NEHUTA demanded that review committee report presented to the university needs to be brought as an agenda in the emergent executive council meeting of the university that was held on today amidst protests from teachers. The agenda for review report was not placed in today’s executive council meeting. In the previous executive council meeting held on 17th June, the review committee report was placed in the agenda, but it was sidetracked by not discussing it.

Although the report related to teachers’ career, yet it was not discussed leading to protests from teachers. It is interesting to note that the review committee was set up by the same executive council and it now refuses to consider its own report. The committee reviewed cases of promotion of teachers as per act, statute and ordinances of UGC, MHRD and NEHU and recommended “correction” in the date of eligibility of promotion of teachers.

It is observed that teachers’ date of eligibility has been arbitrarily changed by the previous VC Prof. Amarnath Rai. The same VC also rejected a large number of teachers promotion cases by by-passing laid down rules and procedures in the course of interviews. The present VC, however, had earlier promised a judicious correction by setting up a review committee, which is now being reneged.
The NEHUTA in its emergent GBM held on today, 27th June emphasized that the NEHU administration cannot bypass review committee’s recommendations and carry on with business as usual by causing financial and academic damage in teacher’s career, which ultimately is going to affect the cause of higher education in the premier university of the Northeast.

In this context, the NEHUTA resolved that the university needs to respond immediately to correct the situation and restore justice in the career of teachers, as per the review committee report. Further the GBM resolved to seek correction of pay anomalies of teachers, on which it had submitted a detailed report and memorandum.

This pay anomaly is still to be addressed by the university. The GBM decided to wait upto 30th June to seek positive action on the review committee report. Meanwhile the general body also decided to carry on peaceful agitation till it receives positive response from the university.(SP News)
