Ampati July 01: There is an alarming use of cough syrups as intoxicants amongst youngsters in Ampati nowadays and the police are taking strong exception to it. Informing this at an interactive awareness programme held for target groups at Ampati on Friday, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) O Massar stated that the police would take stern action on anyone found indulging in substance abuse.
The programme was organized by the Police department in collaboration with the Medical and Social Welfare departments for target groups as part of the International Day against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Massar while elaborating on substance abuse said that South West Garo Hills being a new district was susceptible to the evils of drugs abuse and as such the police would be vigilant against such activities. He cautioned the participants not to fall prey to peer pressure and urged them to immediately inform their elders if they found anyone indulging in substance abuse.
DSP H Kharkongor and DSP B Jyrwa also spoke on the occasion shedding light on different topics. While kharkongor elaborated on militancy and urged the gathering not to be taken in by false propaganda of militants, Jyrwa dwelt on new age crimes, like cyber crime,etc.
Kharkongor maintained that militants would always try to lure in new recruits by creating fake ideals and promises. He urged the youth not to be tempted but concentrate on their studies and become able leaders.
Jyrwa cautioned the youth against cyber criminals who thrived by stealing personal information and misuse it. He urged the youth to be careful while sharing information with anyone and told them never to trust messages that announced winning of lotteries etc.
Later, Medical Officer, Ampati CHC, Dr Norimchi Marak spoke on the ill effects of substance abuse and urged the youth not to be tempted into the vicious habit. Speaking on youth related problems leading to substance abuse she informed that a youth clinic manned by two dedicated counselors has been set up at the Ampati CHC to cater to their needs.
