Training cum research workshop on raditional farming will be held in ICAR Umiam

Shillong, June 09: A one-day training cum research workshop on “Traditional farming and development of Indigenous marketing pathways for sustainability of Indigenous farming systems” will be held on the 12th June 2017 at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam. The programme is jointly organised by The Indigenous Partnership, Rome (TIP), North East Slow Food and Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research for NEH Region.

The workshop is aimed at providing a holistic approach to Indigenous Marketing Pathways and the future of traditional farming by embracing agroecology as the framework, and the role they play in coping with climate change.

Dr. Carl Rangad, Vice Chairman, Operations NESFAS informed that traditional agriculture and agroecology both working together, represent the greatest potential to reduce the emission of carbon in the atmosphere, thereby contributing to climate change adaptation.

The main resource person, agroecologist Dr. Francisco Rosado May of the Intercultural Maya University of Quintana Roo, Mexico, will be facilitating the workshop and take the lead in training the participants on issues to strengthen market access for stress-tolerant and nutritionally under-utilized crops, and identify methods, approaches and tools for coping with climate change for improving livelihood opportunities. The workshop will also focus on enhancing capacities of farmers and other value chain actors in conserving and using agrobiodiversity sustainably.

Dr. Carl Rangad expressed, “It is expected that this would not be a one-off workshop but a beginning to a series of workshops based on the outcomes of the present one and would trigger off the change that is targeted for a better and sustainable ecosystem in the North Eastern Region of India.”
