Make India healthier, MLCU today concluded the National Nutrition Week

Shillong Sept 06 :  Joining in the national effort to make India healthier, Martin Luther Christian University today concluded its week long observation of the National Nutrition Week with an awareness programme held at the university campus.

This awareness programme was organised by the Nutrition and Dietetic Cell of the Department of Allied Health Sciences, MLCU on the theme “Nutrition Awareness: A Key to Healthy nation”, with the objective to create mass awareness about healthy eating especially among the adolescents and teenagers.

Mrs. L S Wallang, Demonstration Officer, Food & Nutrition Board, Ministry of Women and Child Development, was the resource person for the day and she spoke at length about educating ourselves about the various development ion the food industry with regards to processed foods, genetically modified organisms (GMO), pesticides used, etc.

She further added that we should all make informed food choices and that one should be aware of food facts and not be swayed by persuasive advertising.

She also stressed on the importance of developing good food habits and that we should change our food habits in accordance with growth and change in our body.

Mrs. Wallang also inaugurated the Model Exhibition and the Innovative Diet Exhibition which showcased food models and types of nutritious food, etc.

The alumni of the department also set up a Diet Clinic, which gave consultation s to students and faculty alike regarding their daily diets.

The programme was attended by Ms. L Phanwar, Dietitian, NRC Unit, Ganesh Das hospital, Shillong; Ms P Syiemlieh, Guest Lecturer, Bansara Eye Care & NEIGRHIMS, students from Holy Child Higher Secondary School and St. Mary’s College, Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics and students from other departments of the university.

Various competitions were also held during the day which included, Model Exhibition, Innovative Diet Exhibition, Poster Competition and an Open Quiz Competition. Earlier in the week, the department also organised a food fest in the university campus.
