Medical Colleges in Assam denied admission to Medical students from Meghalaya:ADE

Shillong, September 01: The Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) expresses its grave concerns regarding the denial of admission of all the medical students from Meghalaya in various Medical Colleges in Assam. Students from Meghalaya were out rightly denied admission in the said institution without any valid reason put forward by the authority. They were the state nominees from Meghalaya through NEC quota. They were duly selected candidates by the Under Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department Government of Meghalaya.

As per our knowledge goes, the sole reason behind the denial of admission could be guessed as the order (DME/UG/29/2017/8164-66) issued by the Director of Medical Education, Assam to the Medical Colleges of Assam to abolish the 13 nos. of seats for MBBS students allotted to state of Meghalaya through the NEC quota and reduction of Central (Pool) quota of seats from 15 nos. to 6 nos.

This step motherly behavior of the Assam Government towards the neighboring state students would not be tolerated at any cost and ADE sincerely requests the Government of Meghalaya to take necessary steps to rectify this issue as soon as possible and to ensure the educational rights of the our students. Not a single student was able to get  admisoon  in any of the Medical Colleges in Assam . It’s noteworthy that with the denial, not only the year long hard toil of the students will be wasted,  but with it goes down the hope of their parents, the future of our society. If its not dealt promptly, our state won’t be able to produce any Doctor, Dentist this year.

It’s a huge misfortune for us as inhabitants of Meghalaya, even after 55 years of earning statehood; we could not provide our children a quality medical education. We have to look for other states to take MBBS, BDS courses. Lack of Doctors, Specialists, and qualified medical practitioners has become a common feature in the state and people have been suffering since the very beginning. And this situation seems to last for a very long time if current working mechanism of the Education Department remains unchanged. If the Govt. could not provide the basic service of quality education for our future generation, they should avoid making false promises of development in the near future.

For the sake of those unfortunate students, ADE would like to appeal both the Assam and  Meghalaya state Governments to come up with a inclusive mechanism which could offer better chances of collaboration in quality educational for the benefit of both the states and make arrangements for the students so that they can continue their medical studies without any hindrence. Siad Mr Dalseng Bira Ch Momin President of the organization in the press statement issued today.
