Shillong, March 04: As part of the observation of the National Safety Day on March 4, 2022, the Department of Tourism and Travel Management, Martin Luther Christian University organised a workshop on ‘First Aid in Tourism’ at MLCU campus in collaboration with Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital Shillong. The workshop was attended by students and faculty of the department.
The medical consultants and staff of the nursing school of Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital facilitated the workshop with sessions that acquainted students with the right methods of administering medical assistance in injuries and emergency situations.
Demonstrations related to early management of trauma was presented by Dr BanteilangNonglang (Consultant Orthopedic), toxicologyby SrBashidaSynrem (Asst Nursing Superintendent), medical and surgical emergency presented by Sr Graceful Lyngdoh (Asst Prof, College of Nursing) and Basic Life Support (BLS) by Dr Banhiam C Kharrngi (Incharge Emergency and Trauma Care Unit). The students also had hands on learning on what has been demonstrated in the sessions.
Mr Gerald Samuel Duia, Founder, Duia Trailblazers, an adventure tour operation group in Shillong, started the workshop with a narration of his own experience as a tour operator where he encountered certain risks, injuries and accidents on field and therefore stressed on the importance of being equipped with first aid knowledge and to be trained about life saving skills so as to be able to handle and safe clients and themselves in an emergency situation in tour guiding activities and to create a more secure and safer tourism sector
The Chief Guest of the event Dr Shibolleth Khonglah, Addl DM&HO, East Khasi Hills District, stressed on the importance of First Aid training for students of the tourism and hospitality industry since this will help them meet their health and safety requirements and place themselves in a position of preparedness. She also highlighted on the importance for first aiders to enhance compassion and express empathy in order to deliver comfort and care during medical emergencies.
