Come up with a strategic way to curb such diseases, asked Smti Marak

Shillong, June 14: A State level Workshop under the theme: “Transboundary, Exotic and Emerging Diseases – A Strategic Insight and Deliberation” was held at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. The programme was organised by the Office of the Assistant Director (Disease Investigation & Disease Surveillance Wing Meghalaya, Shillong.

Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, AH & Veterinary Department, Smti M.H.K. Marak graced the inaugural session as Chief Guest.

In her brief address as Chief Guest, Smti M.H.K. Marak dwelt at length about the diseases that are zoonotic and contagious in nature, which are also the common cause of death for the cattle and livestock. She also informed that there is a need to come up with a strategic way to curb such diseases and stressed on the need for organising awareness programmes so that cattle losses as a result of these diseases can be made minimal.

The inaugural session was followed by a technical session wherein topics, namely, “Emerging infections: A threat to Human and Animal Health”, Emerging bacterial zoonoses in India with special reference to Meghalaya”, Parasitic infections in Animals of North Eastern Region” and “Animals Disease Reports” were discussed.

Others present during the inaugural session include Dr. (Mrs) W. Papang, Director, AH & Veterinary Department, Dr. Arnab Sen, Head Animal Health Division, ICAR, Umiam, Dr (Ms) P. Passah, Assistant Director (DI) and Dr. K.B. Sahkhar, Assistant Director (Livestock Census) among others.
