Shillong, March 6: The North Eastern Hill University, Shillong observed International Women’s Day with an interactive session at the Conference Hall of the Administrative Block, Shillong today the 6th February 2020 where eminent women figures shared their views on celebrating the day.
Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA, Laitumkhrah-Malki Constituency, as Chief Guest said that political empowerment is crucial to uplift women in our society as women are scarcely populated in the political arena. She urged women to take a responsible pledge to see how another woman can help another woman and to also remember to support women on their own terms.
She also mentioned that health educations among women are low in Meghalaya which is one among many concern for the State Government. “Roles need to merge for both men and women, only then a shift in paradigm could be seen to bring equality,” she said.
She requested all women not to shy away from discussing women’s rights and urged to continue rallying together for women’s rights.
Prof. B B P Gupta, Vice Chancellor incharge, in his address said that we are here today celebrating the International Women’s Day due to the 1500 American ladies who started the Gender Equality Movement. The movement picked up and spread across the countries.
He also added that we can celebrate Women’s Day for what these ladies have achieved “Gender Equality”. Further he added that NEHU has 0 tolerance for discriminating women.
Prof. Monica Agarwal, Director, NIFT, Shillong as Guest of Honour added that women empowerment leads to a strong nation and that we need to build up with economic capability.
She also said that we should respect each human being and we should be independent in thought process and be proud to say that I have contributed. She also added that we should contribute in different areas in developing a successful nation.
Smt.Phikaralin Wanshong, Entrepreneur, Shillong as a special guest shared her experiences as a Successful Entrepreneur.The function was also attended by the Registrar of NEHU, professors, lecturers besides other prominent academicians.
