Williamnagar, October 15: Utter lawlessness has become the order of the day in, Meghalaya if the miscreant activities at Rongjeng area of North Garo Hills district are any indication.
A circle of miscreants starts unleashing a reign of terror in the entire area demanding money from a section of the local residents who would be compensated for loss of their land in an upcoming road project.
Sources said that some miscreants have already approached these beneficiaries forcing them to sign a “power of attorney” for leaving 30 per cent of the compensation amount in their names spreading massive anger and dissatisfaction in the area.
Despite information the authorities have yet to deal with the situation where miscreants have been running a parallel administration in broad day light.
“I have signed the papers after they mounted pressure on me to do so. They came to me in group” said a local villager who was forced to sign a “power of attorney” under pressure.
Most of the villagers have already signed the power of attorney. But the local residents have not so far talked to the police. “We have not filed any complaint before the police so far for the sake of our lives” said another signatory.
The Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills, while speaking to SP News Agency he said that “I have not received any complaint on this matter, but will look into it, and see that only genuine land owner will get the land compensation if it is to be paid”.
