NE States shold wake up to reap the maximum benefits from the tourism sector:Synrem

Shillong, September 04: A two-day national Seminar on “Sustainable Tourism, Striking a Socio-Economic and environmental Balance,” was organised by the Sociology Department, Synod College.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest Economic Adviser, North Eastern Council W Synrem said that stakeholders from Northeast should ensure that they get a fair share of the benefit from the booming global tourism sector and take steps to intricate relations between sustainable tourism and the environment.

“It is time for the North Eastern States to wake up and try to reap the maximum benefits from the tourism sector,” he said. Synrem also defined sustainable tourism as an industry committed to making a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate future employment for local people.

Earlier AK Nongkynrih HoD Sociology NEHU said that Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. It is an increasingly important source of income, employment and wealth in many countries. Its rapid expansion has, however, had detrimental environmental (and socio-cultural) impacts in many regions.
