Rapist surrender before the police in Garo Hills

Tura, May 3: An alleged rape on a minor in Meghalaya’s Garo hills has sent shockwaves across the state. The accused, who surrendered yesterday, was produced in the court today. He has been sent for a 10 day police remand.

Eight days ago, the girl aged 8 years was raped in Chibinang village, located about 100 km from here. The accused – Munaf Ali, 24, surrender yesterday at Phulbari police station.

The police swung into action, after the matter was intervene by an IPS officer, Digvijay Singh, posted in Phulbari town of West Garo Hills on probation.

On May 31, police met the victim’s mother, the father ran away, as police were told that the victim’s father was striking a ‘compromise deal’ for the heinous crime.

Police officers tell us that the victim’s mother also refused to divulge any details. The police took a suo moto case and began their investigation.

The medical examination confirmed that the minor was raped mercilessly. Following which, the victim’s mother filed an FIR.

“This is ridiculous! What is the use of the law if they are trying to compromise cases as grave as rape. We can’t believe that the parents felt like making a compromise, in spite of the fact that the act was perpetrated on their minor daughter. The incident is criminal and what the parents tried to do was worse”, said Singh, who is in-charge of the Phulbari police station.

The victim’s parents today met the police officials and have stated that they were threatened by the accused and his family.(SP News)
