Jowai, November 17: The Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills District Mr Arunkumar Kembhavi said that the currency situation has considerably improved in the district. Length of the queue in front of the banks have reduced everywhere except may be in Apex Bank.
Rural bank branches have been directed to tie-up with their parent branches in Jowai. However the bank managers have complained that people are still refusing to take the coins out of habit. Desperate times require desperate measures. The DC said “that you cannot demand 100, 20, 10 denomination notes from the counter anymore. Banks have been directed to give 2000 denomination notes and coins only.
The DC of West Jaintia Hills ha given also the position of the coins in the main UBI Jowai branch currency chest.Re 1-192500, Rs 2-295000, Rs 5-12500, Rs 10-1860000. Total value of coins is 23,60,000 Rs which is sufficient for district’s requirement. This doesn’t include the coins which are already present in other banks like SBI etc.
He said “we are expecting fresh remittance from RBI Guwahati on the 18th November that is tomorrow including the new 500 denomination hopefully. We are praying that the situation will stabilise in the coming days. All ATMs in the district have been shut down till fresh remittance or till re-calibration”.
There have been also reports of fake 10 rupees coins, “Let me assure you all that fake 10 Rs coins have not been detected in the district so far. RBI has said that those refusing to accept it could face legal action”.
Also reports of shopkeepers harassing customers to buy items worth Rs 2000. It is the individual responsibility of the shopkeeper to arrange enough change.
