Shillong, November 16: During the Commemoration ceremony of the Platinum Jubilee of The Assam Regiment, the Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya, Shri V Shanmuganathan unveiled the commemoration plaque and released the Assam Regiment History Book titled – The Indomitable Rhino Warriors of India’s Northeast covering the period from 2002 to 2016.
The book has been authored by Lt Gen JR Mukherjee, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd) and Col Mani K Gahatraj (Retd).On the ocassion, Lt Gen Subrata Saha, Colonel of The Assam Regiment and Arunachal Scouts alongwith serving and veterans Rhinos gathered at the Lawns of Governor House in Shillong to commemorate the 75th year of the Raising of The Assam Regiment. The Assam Regiment was raised on these very lawns in Shillong on 15 Jun 1941by Lt Colonel Ross Howman.
The then Governor during his raising speech in 1941 had said, “You have the prouder and more arduous task of making your own history and your own traditions. You are the living symbol of Assam’s martial ardour the embodiment of the physical strength and I have no doubt your steadfastness your bravery, your skills and your endurance will surpass all”.
Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya while addressing the serving and veteran soldiers said that the Assam Regiment had truely lived upto the expectations of the people of the Northeast and the founding fathers of the Regiment and has been able to showcase the vast talent of the robust yet friendly people of the region both at the National and International levels.
The Regiment has contributed immensely in tapping the hidden potential of the people of the North East in multi-faceted fields of guarding the boundaries of Indian sovereignty, fighting militancy and providing sportsmen to the Indian Army. It has successfully provided appropriate platform to the large section of population of North Eastern states located in far flung areas, thereby providing the means of livelihood to a large section of the hilly people to proving their mettle time and again and integrating them in the Defence of the Mother Land.
