Shillong, March 9: As the curtains drew on the much-celebrated 3rdMonolith Festival, organized by the Khasi Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the enchanting Khasi Heritage Village witnessed the grand finale of this cultural extravaganza, today.
The Chief Minister, Shri Conrad K Sangma, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, joined by Shri Bah Paul Lyngdoh, Minister of the Tourism Department, who adorned the event as the Guest of Honour, Deputy CEM Pynshngain Syiem, ADCs from Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Tripura Tribal Autonomous Council, MDCs, amongst other dignitaries.
Reflecting on the significance of the Monolith Festival, Chief Minister Shri Conrad K Sangma shared his thoughts saying that any community is differentiated by its Culture and identity.
He stated that it is the sole duty as Govt to protect, preserve and promote aspects of cultural heritage. Chief Minister said, they should have traditional markets functioning every day, to remind our identity and rich cultural Heritage, and showcase it to the rest of the world.
Moreover, Chief Minister assured that the Government will continue to support all three district councils. He also added he was happy to announce that under the leadership of Bah Paul Lyngdoh, Arts and Culture Minister, we will be starting a programme called CM’s research scholarship programme where every year.
In this programme the Government will be funding Rs 3 lakh per researcher and scholar, and up to 50 researcher every year will be funded by the Government of Meghalaya to do research on our culture, and different historic aspects of the State.
In this connection, Chief Minister also said that a committee will also be formed, where they will screen different applicantswho will work hand in hand with the Government to do research. The Monolith Festival emerges as a spirited homage, passionately dedicated to commemorating the deep-seated cultural heritage of the Khasi tribe.
It serves as an energetic stage, not only honoring the traditions laid down by the forefathers but also providing a vibrant platform for local artisans, craftsmen, and performers to showcase their exceptional talents.
This meticulously organized festival stands as a living testament to the varied cultural legacy embedded within the tribes of Meghalaya, placing a particular emphasis on the preservation and significance of the revered Monoliths.
During his address,Hon’ble Arts and Culture Minister, Shri Bah Paul Lyngdoh, emphasized the three cornerstones that strengthens the tribal communities. The three Ls include- Land, Lineage and Language, strengthening the tribal communities.
The closing day provided a spectacular showcase, featuring a lineup of enthralling traditional dance performances. Attendees were treated to mesmerizing presentations such as Shad Phap Kwiar, Shad Kiewiing, Shad Ksing, Shad Kyntud, Shad Ot Syier, Shad Shoh Kba, Shad Pdiah, Shad Kynrup Khla, Shad Phor.
The Chief Minister pointed out and many more by the various Himas. The stage also resonated with the soul-stirring melodies of distinguished artists like Ki Sur Ksing na Lyngngam, Ahaia, Pynshailang Lyngdoh Mawphlang, Lily Sawian, Na u Bnai, Benedict Hynniewta, Dalariti, and Summersalt.
Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Abhijit Kro said that it is his first time that he attended the festival and enjoyed the pleasant weather and food. Stating that there are Khasis residing in Karbi Anglong; he said that the land will be allocated for the construction of Khasi guest house in Diphu.
As we bid farewell to this edition of the Monolith Festival, the memories created and the cultural exchange fostered will undoubtedly resonate, leaving an indelible mark on all those who participated and attended, showcasing the government’s commitment to preserve and promote the cultural identity of the Khasi Community.
